Behind the scenes

How Mutti Whole Baby Roma Tomatoes are made

Selected at peak ripeness

Our baby Roma tomatoes undergo a rigorous selection process, to assess colour, ripeness and overall quality. They are then gently washed, ensuring only the finest tomatoes continue their journey, preserving their delicate texture and consistency.

Whole, with a Touch of Tomato Juice

The selected Datterini are placed whole into the can, then gently surrounded with a small amount of tomato juice. This preserves their juicy texture and lets their naturally sweet, distinctive character remain at the heart of every bite.

Filled, Sealed & Gently Pasteurised

Once filled and sealed, the cans are pasteurised for about an hour at 90°C, preserving the tomatoes and their bright flavour until they are ready to reach your kitchen.

How to use

Cooking Tips

Keep the cooking brief to let the Datterini retain their fresh, sweet character. Warm them gently until they soften and release their juices, or leave some whole for bursts of flavour and texture in quick pasta sauces and seafood dishes.

Unique touch

Whole Baby Roma tomatoes preserve what makes this variety so distinctive: thin skin, juicy flesh and pronounced natural sweetness. Harvested with care and processed quickly, they bring the lively character of freshly picked tomatoes straight into the recipe.

Ideal pairings

At their best, Datterini express a natural sweetness and very low acidity, perfect enjoyed raw in salads or on bruschetta. They also turn into a quick, intensely flavourful sauce with almost no effort, especially with fish and shellfish.

Product FAQ

What are Baby Roma or Datterini tomatoes?

Baby Roma, also known as Datterini, are small, elongated tomatoes known for their pronounced natural sweetness, juicy flesh and delicate skin. Their distinctive shape and lively flavour make them particularly expressive when preserved whole.

Where do Mutti Baby Roma Tomatoes come from?

Mutti Baby Roma Tomatoes are 100% Italian. They are carefully harvested when ripe and processed quickly after picking to preserve their fresh tomato character, juicy texture and natural sweetness.

What is the difference between Whole and Peeled Baby Roma Tomatoes?

Whole Baby Roma retain their naturally thin skin, giving them a lively, fresh texture that softens quickly during cooking. Peeled Baby Roma are gently steam-peeled before being preserved, creating an especially tender, succulent result.

Why are Datterini particularly suitable for quick sauces?

Their thin skin softens readily with heat, while the juicy flesh releases sweetness into the sauce without requiring prolonged cooking. A brief simmer is often enough to bring their fresh, ripe character into the dish.

Should Whole Baby Roma Tomatoes be left intact when cooking?

They can be. Leaving some Datterini whole gives the finished dish juicy bursts of tomato and a more varied texture. For a richer sauce, gently press a few as they warm so their sweet juices mingle with the other ingredients.
