1
Heat olive oil in a large saucepot over medium-high heat. Add shallots, garlic and red pepper and cook for about 5 minutes or until shallots are golden, stirring frequently.
2
Stir in white wine and cook about 3 minutes or until reduced by half.
3
Stir in Mutti® Finely Chopped Tomatoes, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer partially covered about 20 minutes or until thickened slightly, stirring occasionally.
4
Add mussels to the pot and stir gently to distribute them evenly within the sauce. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. Gently shake the pan a couple of times during cooking, without removing the cover, to redistribute the mussels.
5
After 5 minutes, remove the cover from the pan to check the mussels. Most should be open. If some remain closed, cover and cook for an additional 2 minutes. At this time, if any mussels are still closed, discard them.
6
Arrange mussels in shallow serving bowls and ladle sauce over them.

Serve your delicious Mussels Fra Diavolo with crusty bread or over hot cooked pasta. Garnish with fresh parsley.
Fra diavolo sauce is essentially a classic Italian tomato sauce with some added kick. What distinguished it from the marinara sauce are the heavy use of red pepper as well as the addition of white wine. Fra diavolo sauce is typically combined with seafood, especially with shellfish. Besides mussels, lobster and shrimp fra diavolo are also very popular fra diavolo recipes.
Crusty bread is perfect for dipping and soaking up this flavourful tomato broth. Or to make a more substantial meal, you can also serve the dish as a seafood pasta. Linguine pasta is the most typical choice of pasta to go with Mussels fra diavolo, however other similar pasta shapes such as fettuccine and spaghetti will also work fine.
As the sauce is tomato-based, take care to prepare your fra diavolo recipe with high-quality ingredients. Mutti Polpa’s finely chopped tomatoes make it easy and fast to prepare a fra diavolo sauce with the sweet flavor of freshly picked tomatoes, without having to chop the tomatoes yourself. The tomatoes in Mutti Polpa are picked when perfectly ripe from the Emilia Romagna region in Italy, after which they are cold crushed and processed with our patented technique to capture the rich and fresh flavor of just-harvested tomatoes. Mutti Polpa is therefore ideal for the simple yet elegant Mussels Fra Diavolo.
