A new home for house martins, designed to support wildlife and strengthen the surrounding ecosystem.
Mutti’s relationship with the land has always been at the heart of its story. Around our production site in Montechiarugolo, this commitment has taken shape through a long-term programme aimed at restoring and enhancing local ecosystems.
The House of Swallows is the first step in this journey. Conceived as a nesting site for swallows and house martins, it is part of a broader environmental restoration project designed to recreate habitats and encourage biodiversity in the agricultural landscape surrounding the factory.
More than a single structure, the project combines habitat restoration, ecological design and long-term observation, creating an environment where different species can find suitable conditions to live and thrive.
The Swallows House was conceived as a multifunctional habitat, bringing together a range of features that support local wildlife. Native shrubs typical of the Po Valley were planted around the structure, while a wildflower meadow provides forage for pollinating insects. A declining poplar tree was also retained as a habitat tree, preserving an existing ecological resource.
The House was specifically designed to host different nesting spaces: artificial nests for house martins were installed beneath its roof, while dedicated nesting areas for swallows were incorporated into the structure, giving the project its name. Additional habitat elements, including nesting boxes for barn owls, shelters for bats, and features for solitary bees and small mammals, further enhance the site’s ecological value.
Although originally designed for swallows and house martins, the structure was planned to accommodate a wider range of species.
Inside, artificial nests have been installed for swallows, while the upper loft includes dedicated access for barn owls and other nocturnal birds of prey. Separate openings and wooden panels provide roosting spaces for bats. Nesting sites for solitary bees and shelters for small mammals, including hedgehogs, have also been incorporated into the project.
By combining different habitats within a single site, the House of Swallows aims to support a diverse community of wildlife in the landscape surrounding the factory.
A circular nature trail allows visitors to explore the restored area while observing wildlife with minimal disturbance.
Interpretive panels inside the House of Swallows explain the objectives of the project, introduce key concepts related to biodiversity in agricultural ecosystems, and describe the species that may inhabit the site.
The project is also documented through a naturalist’s journal created after a year of field observations, bringing together scientific notes, illustrations and seasonal records of the wildlife living around the Swallows House.
